Background: Pheochromocytoma/Paraganglioma (PPGL) are rare neuroendocrine tumors that expresses somatostatin receptors (SSTR) and can be treated with radiolabeled somatostatin analogues such as Lu-177-DOTATATE. Ga-68-DOTATATE PET scans show the distribution and density of SSTR+ tumors, and F-18-FDG PET scans show hypermetabolism in lesions. Total uptake volumes (TUV) for each respective scan can be obtained consistently and semi-automatically using standardized workflow in ima...

Repeating thyroid FNAC: inter-observer agreement among high- and low-volume thyroid services in Naples metropolitan area and correlation with the EU-TIRADS

Scappaticcio Lorenzo , Trimboli Pierpaolo , Iorio Sergio , Arena Stefania , Di Martino Nicole , Palmieri Annarita , Esposito Katherine , Bellastella Giuseppe

Objective: Our institution (University Hospital “L. Vanvitelli“ - Naples, Italy) is a high-volume (HV) center in Naples metropolitan area and many patients are referred there to repeat thyroid fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) after initial FNAC performed in low-volume institutions (LV). The aims of the study were to 1) to examine the inter-observer agreement between HV and LV institutions according to the Italian thyroid cytology system, and 2) explore how the ...

11C-methionine PET--CT co-registered with volume MRI: a novel adjunctive imaging modality to aid diagnosis and management in patients with pituitary adenomas

Although MRI remains the investigation of choice for pituitary imaging, it does not provide information about ‘functionality’ of lesions (e.g. residual adenoma vs post-surgical scar tissue) and cannot reliably identify all microadenomas. We hypothesised that i) imaging with the PET ligand 11C-methionine, which is taken up at sites of peptide/protein synthesis, would permit more reliable identification of functioning pituitary adenoma ...

Effect of vitamin B12 deficiency on the lipid lowering effect of metformin in the liver

Boachie Joseph , Adaikalakoteswari Antonysunil , Samavat Jinus , Saravanan Ponnusamy

Background: Metformin is currently the first drug of choice for treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Metformin is known to reduce lipid levels through activation of AMP activated protein kinase-alpha (AMPKα). Metformin induces deficiency of vitamin B12 (B12) in patients with T2D. In humans, studies have shown that low B12 is associated with dyslipidemia (higher triglycerides and low HDL). Therefore, we investigated whether B12 deficiency m...

Vitamin B12 deficiency triggers adipocyte dysfunction by enhancing triglyceride biosynthesis and pro-inflammatory cytokine production: a new agonist in metabolic disease?

Samavat Jinous , Adaikalakoteswari Antonysunil , Boachie Joseph , Zammit Victor , Saravanan Ponnusamy

Background: Vitamin B12 (B12) is an essential micronutrient required for optimal hematopoietic, neurologic and other several metabolic reactions. Longitudinal studies and animal models showed that low maternal vitamin B12 deficiency is associated with the maternal obesity, development of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome phenotype. Although the mechanisms underpinning metabolic disorders remain poorly defined, it has become increasingly cle...
